For decades or even centuries now, gemstones have been a symbol of class, elegance, distinction, and even psychological gains. The Tanzanite price and value of gemstones such as diamonds have been dictated by their size, grade, and color. However, for rarer gems such as Tanzanite, prices are also subject to the laws of supply and demand, whereby a decreasing quantity of stones mined and an increase in interest for the gems may lead to inflation.

Factors Affecting Tanzanite Prices

Standing among some of the rarest gemstones in the world, Tanzanite has gained incredible collective value due to its scarcity. Found solely in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Tanzanite mines are expected to run out in the next decades making it a collectible asset that will continue to gain value over time.

Top-grade fine Tanzanites are becoming increasingly rare, thus their value is highly interlinked with rarity. The finer the color, cut, or clarity of the stone, the higher the price. Tanzanite stones are usually classified by brackets with a range of possible prices based on their carat weight, color grading, and the different distribution outlets. A range of prices is usually considered as the purchase of the gem from high-end distributors such as Tiffany & Co may result in significantly higher costs than buying from the source.

As a general idea, the purchase of a Tanzanite Prices of up to 1.99 carats in 2020 could reach prices of around $600-$700 for the finest investment grade stones, $425-$480 for AAA grade, $300 for AA grade, $200 for A grade and $100 for B grade.

The Beginning

Discovered in 1967 in the foothill of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Tanzanite rough stone had little to no monetary value as it was still unknown to gemologists and the public. Unaware of the treasure they had stumbled upon, it is said that the Maasai people, the initial discoverers of the Tanzanite stones, would merely play with the bright blue gems. It is only later that Manuel de Sousa, an immigrant from Goa, India, recognized the value of the alluvial deposits of blue zoisite found around the foothill and filed an appeal for the mining of Tanzanite.

Modern Age

Soon after the beginning of the mining process, Tiffany & Co, renowned American luxury jewelers, took an interest in the unique, intense bluestone and took control of the market, renaming what was once ‘blue zoisite’ after its country of origin.

During this period, Tanzanite prices skyrocketed as the brand held the monopoly and marketed the gem as the stone of a generation until the diversification of the market in the 80s. Furthermore, the unreliable supply has kept the Tanzanite price high while the demand continued to increase as the word of the discovery of this rare stone spread further.

2021

As interesting news for people looking to invest in a Tanzanite gem, the current worldwide Covid-19 situation has resulted in a drop in prices of about 20-30%, similar to the recession in 2008 and 2009. While we hope the virus will be ancient history soon, now is the perfect time to buy fine Tanzanite at reduced prices and make an investment of ever-increasing value.

We, at The Tanzanite Experience, are here to assist you in making the best investment possible by choosing the best from a wide selection of stones and jewelry for yourself and your future generations.

Jewelry, precious stones, and gems like Tanzanite have represented monetary value throughout centuries. Symbols of class, wealth, and style, gemstones are more than beautiful trinkets complementing your favorite outfits. Precious gems have even been associated with the survival of escaping imperialists during the fall of Imperial Russia who was able to start new lives in other countries by selling their gemstones.

Similarly, going back as far as the last stand of the French monarchy, the ill-fated Marie-Antoinette, Queen of France, was known to own an impressive collection of jewels as assets to parry a volatile monetary system. Although her beheading in 1793 did not allow her to reap the fruits of this smart investment, a portion of the queen’s jewels was recently sold for $53.2 million at an auction in Geneva.

In an era that saw monetary value fluctuate on a daily basis, it is primordial to make concrete investments that are relatively safe and stable. In comparison to traditional currency, bitcoins or stock actions are often a gamble as they are subject to a plethora of complex external factors.

Real estate, gold, jewelry, and even classic paintings have been relatively unaffected by general economic depreciation. Quite the contrary, these types of physical possessions act as assets that either maintain or gain worth over the years and guarantee a financial backup during hard times. A 'store of value is known as an acquisition that can be saved and profitably exchanged at a later time as it carries its purchasing power into the future.

Gold, for example, has been associated with wealth since the beginning of time. It has been deemed among some of the best stores of value due to its steady worth. Over the last 5000 years, gold has maintained its purchasing power through periods of war, economic insecurity, political upset, and more.

Tanzanite as an Investment

Tanzanite stones or jewelry, for example, hold increasing monetary value due to their rarity. A thousand times rarer than diamonds, geologists have estimated Tanzanites to have been completely extracted from their mines in the next few decades. The window for the acquisition of firsthand Tanzanites is thus greatly limited, giving it its popular name of ‘the gem of a generation.

Since the value of jewelry and precious stones, like Tanzanite, steadily appreciates with their scarcity, investing in Tanzanites now is seen as a strategic move for the future. The forecast decrease in the availability of Tanzanite jewelry makes it one of the best and safest ways to store and get a return on your money over time.

Whether you are planning ahead for your retirement, special projects, emergencies, or even as a piece of heritage for your children, Tanzanite is a piece of property that will keep on gaining more and more worth over the years.

With its intense blue pigment and unique personality, Tanzanite has already been sought after by many over the past few years as an elegant, timeless, and bold piece of jewelry. Complementing your outfits with a Tanzanite ring, necklace, or delicate pair of earrings is sure to make you stand out in a crowd.

However, over and beyond the undeniable physical appeal of this unique trichroic gem, many collectors have added Tanzanites or Fancy Tanzanites to their sets for their collectible value. Due to its durability and increasing demand, the gem is a relatively low-risk investment as its worth does not deteriorate in times of economic crisis.

Similar to how a rare painting needs a clean and appropriately aired environment to maintain its optimal condition, with proper care Tanzanite may just be the investment breakthrough you are looking for. If you are looking for a safe and durable store of value, then browse through our online catalog and choose from a plethora of certified top-grade Tanzanite jewelry and loose stones.

Anyone looking to invest in a piece of Tanzanite jewelry must have come across terms such as carat weight, grading, and cut among others. These factors are commonly associated with all types of gemstones as they are used to estimate their value, but what do they actually mean when it comes to size? If you are looking to acquire your first Tanzanite jewelry then you must understand the specifics associated with Tanzanite value per carat.

Blue gemstone with high tanzanite value per carat

What is Tanzanite Carat Weight?

A gem's carat weight is usually among the first factors buyers take into account when selecting a precious stone as it is directly influential on its price. It is a measurement unit used in gemology to represent the weight and is usually abbreviated to cts (carats) or ctw (carat weight) for reference. When a jeweler refers to a gem of one carat, he is actually referring to a stone of 200 milligrams or 0.00705 oz.

Each carat is usually separated into 100 points to ensure a precise measurement. For example, a Tanzanite weighing o.5 carat is referred to as a ‘half-carat’ or a ‘fifty-pointer’ and equals 100 milligrams.  The Tanzanite value per carat tends to be higher for larger blue stones as they are now increasingly rare compared to their smaller counterparts.

What does carat weight imply in terms of size?

Now that the meaning has been clarified, let’s look further into what size actually means in terms of carats for our Tanzanite stones. While carat refers to how much a gem weighs, it does not automatically give you much information about the size of your stone.

Size is about the dimensions of the jewel which are dependent on its height, its surface diameter, and the type of cut selected.

Are carat and size the only factors to pay attention to?

As large Tanzanites with significant weights are usually hard to come by, carat and size are important factors dictating the value of a Tanzanite. However, they are not the only variables to take into account when estimating and selecting a Tanzanite gemstone. Other elements such as color, clarity, and the rating of the cut will affect the value of the stones.

A Tanzanite Gemstone From The Tanzanite experience

Gems of intense blue or violet color are usually worth more than pale Tanzanites. Similarly, a stone with excellent clarity or very few noticeable blemishes is considered to have a significantly greater value than those with eye-visible inclusions. By combining all these ingredients, you can ensure that you invest in a Tanzanite gemstone that both fits your expectations and your budget.

Since its discovery in 1967, Tanzanite has taken over the globe and captured more than one heart. The unique blue gem made famous by Tiffany and Co has since been worn as a fashion statement by multiple celebrities and public figures over the years. Known to evoke elegance and timeless style, tanzanite jewelry is both an accessory and an investment. If you are looking to learn all you need to know about genuine tanzanite jewelry, then this guide is for you.

History

The history of tanzanite is deeply interlinked with its people. The stone was first discovered by Jumanne Ngoma, a local herdsman, who spotted the sparkly blue stone at the foothill of Mount Kilimanjaro. He then shared his finding with Manuel de Souza, a gem protestor.

Then known as blue zoisite, the gem became famous when the owners of Tiffany & Co, renowned American jewelers, fell in love with the blue gem and launched a campaign claiming the stone to be ‘the most important gemstone discovery in over 2000 years. After being renamed ‘Tanzanite’ after its only source, the gem seemingly grew in popularity overnight becoming one of the most coveted gemstones in the world.

Composition

The origin of Tanzanite goes back a few hundred million years ago due to significant tectonic activity. The movement of the tectonic plates caused extreme heat and pressure which warmed and cooled the rocks present during the event.

When reaching near melting point, the rocks were metamorphosed into rough blue zoisite crystals which were later named Tanzanites, by Tiffany and Co after their country of origin. The composition of the bedrock during the formation of Mount Kilimanjaro contained deposits of Vanadium to which has been attributed the sumptuous blue-violet of tanzanite jewelry.

Fancy Tanzanite

While blue tanzanite remains the most popular by far, there exist other colors such as pink, orange, yellow and green. These incredibly rare occurrences are often referred to as ‘Fancy Tanzanite’.

While the blue pigment of tanzanite comes from Vanadium in the bedrock, these different colors are said to have been created by traces of other elements such as Manganese.

A well-kept secret between collectors and gemologists, fancy tanzanites, even rarer than their renowned counterparts, are incredible investments and additions to any collection or jewelry box.

Rarity

Authentic tanzanite jewelry is famous for its rarity. The event and conditions which created the stone deposits a hundred million years ago are said to be so unique that the chances of finding another tanzanite source anywhere in the world are close to none.

While diamond has been found in small pockets around the world, Tanzania as the sole source of tanzanite in the world makes it a thousand times rarer than diamonds.

However, that's not the only reason which makes tanzanite so unique. After evaluation, experts have estimated tanzanite mines will run out in the next few decades. This implies that now is the only time for the firsthand acquisition of the blue gemstone from its source.

Rightfully named 'the gem of a generation, people wishing to purchase authentic tanzanite jewelry in the future will need to buy them secondhand.

Quality Tanzanite jewelry and stones from Tanzanite Experience

Trichroic

Naturally, occurring tanzanite often has residues of brown and grey hues. Like most gems, the intense royal blue which has made its fame is acquired through a mild heat treatment to get rid of imperfections and reveal the true jewel underneath.

After the removal of the brown axis, the stone's real color is finally revealed. After so much talk of blue tanzanite, a lot of people don't know that the stone has rare trichroic properties.

Based on the lighting and the angle at which light enters the gem, the gemstone can also demonstrate rich violet, intense blue, or striking red tones. This makes the cutting of the stone significantly more complicated as the type of cut affects the path of the light and thus the color of the gem.

Grading

While tanzanite is a unique gem, it is graded based on a standard GIA system used for other precious stones, such as diamonds.

This system uses the 4C’s, namely color, clarity, cut, and carat weight, to determine the value of a specific stone. Each of these elements has a direct impact on the grade and price of a piece of tanzanite fine jewelry.

For example, tanzanites can have a striking or pale blue tone. Jewels with a higher color intensity will rank better and thus be more valuable than their faded counterparts.

The same applies to other factors of the GIA grading system, a clear gem with close to no inclusions and a good carat weight could rank as an investment-grade gem.

The GIA grading system is mostly used to evaluate the stones but also to provide peace of mind to its buyers.

Each piece of genuine tanzanite jewelry for sale is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity listing the level of its carat weight, clarity, color, cut, and overall grade. The certificate is thus a confirmation that the buyer is purchasing the jewel at the right price but also that the gem has been ethically mined in accordance with the Tucson Tanzanite Protocol and labor rights.

Investment

Is tanzanite jewelry a good investment? The answer is yes. Beyond the beauty of tanzanite jewelry, its scarcity is what makes it a truly worthwhile investment. With mines expected to run dry in the near future, tanzanite is among some of the rarest gemstones in the world.

Bylaws of supply and demand, tanzanite jewelry thus has an incredible collectible value that is only bound to rise as the years pass. Buying your tanzanite now can thus be a strategic investment as passing down this piece of fine jewelry through the generations means a heritage that constantly grows in value.

How to Care for Your Tanzanite Jewelry?

Tanzanite is a fairly stable and durable stone. However, like all pieces of jewelry, it requires some extra care and cleaning from time to time.

A trusted jeweler will easily restore your gem to its former glory by cleaning and repolishing it if necessary, however, you should be advised that ultrasonic cleaning and harsh chemicals should not be used on tanzanite as the exerted stress may cause some serious damage.

The best way to clean your tanzanite jewelry remains to soak it in warm, soapy water for around 20 to 30 minutes before delicately drying it with a soft cloth.

While tanzanite can be fitted into any piece of fine jewelry such as rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, special attention is required to shield it from rough surfaces and abrasions which may dull its luster and shine.

Natural tanzanite jewelry, especially rings, is not to be worn for daily activities such as household chores as it may expose the gem to friction and harsh chemicals. To avoid rubbing against other accessories in your jewelry box, it is recommended that tanzanite jewelry be stored in a separate pouch.

Tanzanite or Blue Zoisite is a precious stone endemic to Tanzania. Formed over 585 million years ago at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the gemstone has only recently been discovered and extracted for commercial purposes due to its high collectible value.

The Tanzanite has quickly grown in popularity for its fire and its rare trichroic nature. The precious stone is known to boast an intense royal blue, a rich violet, and a sumptuous pink-red at different angles and lighting.

Over the years, the Tanzanite has come to symbolize a soulful and timeless elegance, rarity, and uniqueness. This precious stone and the history of its discovery are deeply rooted in the heart, culture, and economy of Tanzania.

Saniniu Laizer, a small-scale miner from Simanjiro in the Manyara Region, has recently made the unexpected acquisition of the two biggest untreated Tanzanite stones known to date around the world.

Largest Tanzanite Stones ever

Both stones breaking the late record of the Mawenzi stone found in 2005, were purchased by the Tanzanian Government, under orders of the President,  Dr. John Magufuli, in the optic of showcasing them in a local museum to honor the wealth of Tanzania, the significance of the Tanzanite and celebrate a new historical record.

Weight of the Tanzanite Gems

The first gem, weighing a load of 9.2 kg, holds the new record and has been estimated at a total worth of 4.5 billion Tanzanian shillings, while the second stone of 5.8 kg was bought for 3.3 billion shillings.

Laizer with Largest Tanzanite

It is almost overnight that Mr. Laizer joins the list of Tanzanian billionaires, acquiring a payment of 7.8 billion Tanzanian shillings. During an event held at the Mererani Tanzanite Mines in the Manyara Region, he had the opportunity to proudly hand over the two stones to the Minister of Minerals, Mr. Dotto Biteko, and the Assistant Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, under the applause and cheers of the crowd.

During a call with Mr. Biteko, the President highly emphasized the importance of preserving the two stones as part of the local heritage and a way of showing the world that Tanzania really is the only source of Tanzanite.

A Minister with The Largest Tanzanite

Mr. Biteko also communicated the President’s wish to prevent the sale of these jewels to the highest foreign bidder, “If we don’t buy them, they’ll leave the country and we’ll have to pay to go see our own stones abroad. In order to show the world that we are rich with minerals, the president ordered that these stones be purchased and placed in our museums so that people can truly understand that Tanzania is the true source of Tanzanite in the world ”. The latter also made it a point of honor to ensure Mr. Laizer was offered a fair price for his finding and dedication, and not a cent less, on the day of the event itself.

It is in celebration and honor that Tanzania marked the discovery and acquisition of these two record-breaking gemstones. On this day which now makes history, the country is proud to be the only home of this tantalizing precious stone that stands as proof of its wealth and unique potential.

Largest Tanzanite after heated

Also known as the ‘Gem of a Generation’, the collectible value of the stone is accentuated by its decreasing supply. Tanzanite mines are expected to have been fully excavated in the next few decades. This factor combined with the once-in-a-lifetime temperatures, pressures, and mineral conditions required for the formation of Tanzanite ranges it among the rarest jewels in the world, a thousand times rarer than diamonds.

If you are looking to acquire your own Tanzanite, our collection has a wide variety of loose stones and ready-made jewelry of varying color, carat, cut, and clarity which are sure to fit your liking.

Choosing your engagement ring is both an adventure and a challenge. Where do you begin? What style will appeal the most to your loved one? And above all, which gemstone? Diamonds have dominated the market of engagement rings for a few decades now; however, when it comes to professing everlasting love and individuality, the trend has shifted towards alternative and modernistic stones.

Here are 10 reasons why Tanzanite is perfect for your engagement ring:

Originality

Contrary to popular belief, diamonds have not always symbolized engagements and eternal love. The idea was actually born from the promotional slogan, “A Diamond is Forever” by DeBeers in the 1940s.

However, there has been a recent shift in the choice of stone for engagement rings. People are now putting more focus on originality and buying a stone that reflects their personal style than on following an outdated trend.

Tanzanite is a fairly new gem but ready to take the engagement ring market by storm. With its color, fire, and timeless style, buying a Tanzanite engagement ring is the perfect way of showing your partner and the world just how unique your love is.

Origin Of the Stone in Tanzanite engagement ring

Rarity

Tanzanite is listed among some of the rarest and most desirable gemstones in the world. The once-in-a-lifetime conditions of its creation make it incredibly scarce. Found only at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, this gemstone is often referred to as ‘The gem of a generation' due to its depleting supply.

The continental shift which provided the heat, pressure, and mineral conditions for the formation of Tanzanite over 585 million years ago is an extremely rare occurrence. Geologists have estimated the probability of Tanzanite ever being discovered again at one in a million.

Considering this, buying a Tanzanite ring for your engagement becomes a symbol of love, unlike any other.

A Beautiful Tanzanite engagement ring

Color

Tanzanite is famous for its trichroic nature. With hues ranging from royal blue to soft lavender and burgundy reds, this gemstone on an engagement ring is a marvelous fashion symbol.

While the stone’s color depends greatly on its treatment and cut, lighting also plays a significant role in its coloration. Your engagement ring will showcase different hues at different angles and conditions.

A mid-day sun will bring out the intensity of Tanzanite’s royal blue, whereas incandescent light will highlight its soft red undertones.

Known for their positive properties, Tanzanites symbolize prosperity, good fortune, and renewed optimism for a future filled with happiness. Increasing Value

Following the law of demand and supply, Tanzanite is a stone that will increasingly gain value over time. With Tanzanite mines expected to irreversibly run out in the next decade, the scarcity of the stone on the market will only allow it to grow in value as it is passed down through generations.

Tanzanite engagement ring From The Tanzanite Experience

An Heirloom

Rarity, symbolism, and timeless style; all the characteristics of a family heirloom are gathered in this intricate blue gemstone. The passing down of engagement rings has been a lifelong tradition, highly symbolic for many. A Tanzanite engagement ring is a perfect jewel to fulfill this ritual and transmit values, love, and heritage to your children someday.

Affordability

While Tanzanite is at least a thousand times rarer than diamonds, it is also much more affordable. Given its rarity, the stone would be expected to cost a high premium on the market, however, the gem has an incredible value for money which makes it a good investment.

Tanzanite thus has a relatively low price per carat making it a perfect and affordable choice for large and small engagement rings. As personal preferences and taste should be a leading factor when buying an engagement ring, Tanzanite’s fair price gives you the freedom of choosing the perfect size, shape and cut of the stone for your special day.

Overcoming a commercial trend and investing in this intense indigo-blue gem is a choice you will not regret.

Ready-made rings, necklaces, and more are an easy way of spicing up your game for a night out or a sophisticated event.

However, with so many different tastes out there, it is no wonder that some people have turned to the purchase of loose Tanzanite stones and custom-made jewelry to show their individuality.

For people looking to stand out, a piece of Tanzanite jewelry is a statement of elegance, beauty, and refined taste.

Here are Some Steps to Creating Custom Jewelry

Fix a Budget

One of the most important things to do when wishing to create your own custom jewelry is to set a budget.

Determining the range of money you are willing to spend on this piece of jewelry will help you manage your funds and select your type of jewel.

This budget, as far as possible, should comprise of two main sections, namely, funds for the purchase of the loose Tanzanite stones, and funds for the creation of the mount and final jewel.

This will influence your choice of metal and the intricacy of its design. It will also determine the kind of loose Tanzanite stone you purchase for this purpose.

Acquiring Loose Tanzanite Stones

To create your custom jewelry, the next step is to acquire your loose Tanzanite stones. Choosing the right stone is a question of color, carat, clarity, and cut. Our guide to buying Tanzanite stones is an easy way to get accustomed to the terms and characteristics used in the Tanzanite trade. This will allow you to make an informed purchase and select the stones that fit your requirements.

Even as loose stones, Tanzanite comes in all sizes and cuts, such as round, trilliant, marquise, and more.

Furthermore, as Tanzanite often comes in a range of blues, violets, and lavender, the choice of the most beautiful gem depends on the eye of the beholder.

While some prefer the intense blues of the stone, others may prefer its violet undertones. In the end, the choice of stone for your custom jewelry is up to your taste and preferences.

If you don’t know where to start looking for your Tanzanites, take a look at our collection of loose stones and find your certified gemstones.

Design your Piece of Jewelry

The next step to designing your jewelry is to determine what type of accessory you would like. While rings are usually popular choices, a plethora of necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and more can be custom-made to your desire. Once this is settled, you can start designing your custom jewelry.

You should always bear in mind your budget and the occasion it will be used for. For a night out or a gala, you might prefer your jewel to be a fashion statement with intricate designs or classic elegance, however, a piece made for everyday use might compliment you better as a more discrete and subtle jewel.

Tanzanite, whether mounted in an elaborate base or on a simple set of studded earrings, is bound to stand out with its striking blue intensity and fire. So, do not be afraid to keep it simple, it really is up to your taste.

Find Your Jeweler

Now that you have your stones, the next step is to find a trusted jeweler. While this might not be an easy feat, you can ask advice from family and friends or ask your stone seller if they are able to make custom jewelry or if they have any recognized addresses to provide.

Once you have a prospective contact, it is important that you go and meet this jeweler and discuss your ideas together. You should also ask for proof or experience when working with Tanzanites as it is a very sensitive stone that might be damaged in the mounting process if your jeweler is not experienced.

You can then discuss with him/her and find out the best type of metals to hold your loose Tanzanite, such as white gold, silver, or even rose gold among others. He/She might also be in the best position to provide insight into the different types of mounts to protect your stone.

For example, Tanzanite stones mounted on rings often require much care and cleaning, your jeweler might be able to advise you on which types and shapes of mounts to shelter the stone from abrasion.

Discuss your Terms

The final step to the creation of your custom-made jewel is to discuss your terms with your jeweler. He/she would usually charge a minimum fee for the production of the mounts, especially if those are made from scratch.

You should make sure this price fits within your budget. You will then have to establish a set process and timeline from the first discussions to submitting the designs, having a preview, and the delivery of your final piece.

While mounting a stone on a set can be done relatively quickly, creating custom jewelry is a lengthy process that requires much patience, especially if your designs are complex and intricate.

Your unique personality deserves unique jewelry. Creating custom-made jewelry is all about designing something as exceptional as you which reflects your style. It is an audacious and fruitful endeavor that takes you on an adventure into the world of jewelry and Tanzanites
