The Maasai Ladies Project was born out of our belief that real value comes not just from the gemstones we work with, but from the people behind the craft. By providing Maasai women with jewellery-making training, we aim to offer them a means of economic empowerment. These talented women are an inspiration. They combine traditional Maasai influences with modern design, creating distinctive pieces that reflect their culture and strength. Their jewellery is now showcased as part of our Tanzanite collections, bringing their stories and craftsmanship to the world stage.
In October 2024, six women from Mererani travelled to Arusha to participate in a three-day workshop focused on refining their jewellery-making skills. Led by a team of experts from Sidai Design, the workshop covered everything from manufacturing best practices to quality control and business insight. This training not only honed their technical skills but also fostered a network of women supporting each other and sharing their experiences.
The impact of these sessions is tangible, and we are proud of the confidence these women now carry. They leave the workshops not just as artisans, but as empowered individuals ready to create sustainable income streams.
After the workshop, the Maasai ladies visited our retail stores to see where their jewellery is sold. It was a significant moment for them, as they witnessed firsthand how their creations are appreciated and valued in the marketplace. The proceeds from their jewellery sales go directly back to them, allowing them to achieve long-term financial independence.
